March 24, 2014 Zimfest Association Board Meeting Synopsis
Members in attendance: Jacqueline Fallon, Tsitsi Hantuba, Paul Mataruse, Dana Moffett, David Simon, Alex Weeks
Nonvoting member present: Claire Jones
Absent: Jennifer Kyker, Amy Robinson
Special meeting to consider solutions and/or policy changes which impact the financial challenges being faced due to the high number of Zimbabweans who have applied to teach or perform at Zimfest 2014.
Decisions reached at this meeting:
1) The Board has set an upper limit of $10,000 for Zimbabwean meals, room and board, and travel expenses for the 2014 festival. This includes $4000 in pledges from the community – so that the total outlay by the Association is $6000. This budget limit will be communicated to the Organizing Committee, and it will be up to the Organizing Committee to determine how to reach the budgetary goal for the 2014 festival.
2) The Board has a recommendation to the Organizing Committee regarding one way to achieve the $10,000 target. The Organizing Committee is free to implement this recommendation or not.
3) Over the next several months, the Board will focus on development of a comprehensive policy change for both selecting and reimbursing Zimbabwean teachers / performers at future festivals. The Board will discuss the proposed changes with the Zimfest 2014 Zimbabwean participants at the formal meeting with the board. Depending on the outcome of that discussion, these changes may be communicated at the 2014 Village Meeting.
